Of Dates, Dinners and Histamines! Living Fun, Full and Low-Histamine

Hey there fabulous readers!

Okay, let’s face it guys – how many of you have gone out on a date or a dinner party, only to end up with a tell-tale rash, stuffy nose or worse, upset tummy right in the middle of the cheesecake course? In short, it's a scene straight out of a sitcom, minus the canned laughter and plus heaps of histamines!

As a sufferer of histamine intolerance myself, I've been caught in ONE too many such comic-life episodes. But over the years, I've learned a thing or two about living a vibrant, happy and full life, sans histamines. And guess what? I'm going to share those nuggets of wisdom (hilariously, if I may say so) with you in this blog.

Let's start with a simple rule – anything fermented is NOT your friend. I know, I know…your love for sauerkraut and kimchi is real, but your body says "Danger, Will Robinson!" every time you have a bite. So give it a rest, mates. It's tough, but you'll thank me later.

Remember, there's a world beyond Cheddar and Gorgonzola. Yes, dear fellows, broadening your cheese horizons can be the best thing you can do for yourself (and your date, trust me on this). Instead, opt for young, fresh and creamy cheeses like ricotta or mozzarella. A bit of blandness can lead to a whole lot of laughter (and not embarrassment, for a change)!

Alright, red wine lovers, the day you dreaded the most is here. Yes, you guessed it right. Red wine needs to take a backseat. But fear not, for your new allies are gin and vodka. Bonus: you can make some really cool cocktails with them, and as a result, become the life of the party!

Speaking of parties, who says being on a low-histamine diet means you have to forgo delicious meals? Let me share one of my recipes of oven-baked chicken with fresh herbs that never fails to impress (and has saved me from many embarrassing incidents!). It's simple, it's quick, and it's low on histamine but high on taste!

Oven-Baked Herb Chicken

  • Boneless chicken – 500 gm
  • Fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, basil) - Handful, chopped
  • Garlic – 2 cloves, minced
  • Olive oil – 2 tbsp
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Marinate the chicken with olive oil, garlic, chopped herbs, salt and pepper for a few hours. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius and bake the chicken for 15-20 minutes. Bingo! There, you've an easy and healthy dish that won’t trigger your histamine intolerance!

So my dear comrades, let's turn histamine into your 'His-tory-amine'. Say hello to a life of fun, laughter and most importantly, a life sans histamines. Trust me, it's much more fun than huddling in the bathroom, clutching your stomach while your date waits at the dinner table!

Until next time...

Enjoy your low histamine day, Your Matilda
